College of Design Shop
The College of Design Shop is located in the basement of the Architecture East building.
Any questions about the shop or machinery should be directed to gtdesignshop@gmail.com. The shop is also staffed during shop hours if you would like to speak to someone in person.
Students are reminded that the shop operates differently from general maker spaces on campus.
The College of Design shop is exclusively for students in the College, and should only be used for school related work.
Training on the shop's tools is mandatory and typically provided within your introductory courses.
If you missed the orientation, transferred in, or would like a refresher, you can contact the shop or ask a shop technician for additional instruction. However, training sessions only run during the first few weeks of the semester, so students requesting training must do so by the end of the first class week.
Main Fabrication Space
The College of Design Shop features 7 workbenches and 3 sanding tables.
Available tools include belt sanders, disc sanders, drill press, rotary tools, milling machine, and various basic tools.
Students are required to clean up after use to maintain shop privileges.
Advanced Machinery Space
Students must have attended training to use machinery, which includes bandsaw, miter saw, drill press, milling machine, sanding cluster, and table saw. A CNC machine and wood lathe are also available, but both require special training. The shop cabinets hold files, drill bits, wrenches, pliers, and other small tools for student use.
Eye protection is required and available in the metal storage cabinet near the wall. Remember that all machines are dangerous if misused and can cause serious injury or damage.
Metalworking and Shaping Spaces
At the back of the Advanced Machinery Room is a dedicated space for metalworking and related materials. This room is equipped with welding tables, metal lathes, and other metalworking tools. Students must complete proper training before they are allowed to use any of the machinery in this room.
Larger machines dedicated to bending and shaping shaping metals are nearby, in a separate area.
3D Printing Area
For larger projects than the studio printers can handle, the Shop contains a variety of 3D printers available for student use. Students will typically not operate these printers directly, but submit their designs to the Shop for production.
