Celebrating Tenure and Promotions at the College of Design
Melissa Alonso | March 25, 2025 - Atlanta, GA
The College of Design at Georgia Tech is proud to announce the tenure promotions of two esteemed faculty members: Lisa Marks and Claire Arthur. Their dedication to research, teaching, and innovation has made a significant impact on their respective fields and the academic community at large.
Lisa Marks: Promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure
Lisa Marks, formerly an Assistant Professor in the School of Industrial Design, has been promoted to Associate Professor with tenure. Marks specializes in blending traditional handcraft techniques with cutting-edge algorithmic modeling to create sustainable and innovative production methods. She has worked with renowned clients such as Google, Nike, and Swarovski and has gained international recognition for her work, including the prestigious 2019 International Grand Prix Lexus Design Award. At Georgia Tech, she integrates her unique methodologies into the classroom, enriching the curriculum with insights into gender, class, and the historical influences of design.
Claire Arthur: Promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure
Claire Arthur, a distinguished scholar in the fields of Music Perception and Cognition, Computational Musicology, and Music Information Retrieval, has been promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in the School of Music. Arthur leads the Computational and Cognitive Musicology Lab (CCML) and has conducted groundbreaking research on how structural features of music impact cognitive processes, memory, and emotional responses. With a PhD in Music Theory and Cognition from Ohio State University, her work has been widely published in top academic journals. Her research helps bridge the gap between music theory, psychology, and computational analysis, providing new insights into human and AI-generated music.
Faculty Promotions
In addition to our newly tenured faculty, the College of Design congratulates two additional faculty members on their promotions:
Alexander Lerch, School of Music, promoted to Professor. Lerch specializes in Music Information Retrieval and Audio Content Analysis, focusing on machine learning applications for music understanding, generation, and processing. He is also the Associate Dean for Research and Creative Practice and has played a pivotal role in advancing AI-driven music technologies.
Pardis Pishdad, School of Building Construction, promoted to Professor. Pishdad is an expert in smart built environments and innovative project delivery methods. As the Director of the Smart Built Environment Eco-System (Smart Bees) Laboratory, she leads research integrating digital twin technology, IoT, and blockchain into sustainable construction and facility management practices.
Congratulations to all our faculty members on their well-deserved achievements! Their contributions continue to elevate the College of Design and Georgia Tech as leaders in innovation, research, and education.
